OUR RESEARCH
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs)
PFASs are recalcitrant compounds and productive microbial degradation pathways have not been established. We apply innovative enrichment approaches to discover microorganisms that break C-F bonds and degrade PFASs to non-toxic products. For example, a soil isolate was obtained that mineralizes polyfluorinated C8 alkanes and mechanistic studies are ongoing to reveal the unique metabolic capabilities of this organism.
